I think one can make a stronger statement, which is that IEEE 754 interrupts are not needed for IEEE 754 arithmetic, as indicated above.

The IEEE-754 value with maximum exponent and zero mantissa denoted as IEEE-754 infinity is not a number.

The main disadvantage would be incompatibility with 754, I don't see this as a real disadvantage if both versions are provided by the hardware. > but 754 users could benefit from it too so maybe it might become > part of a future 754-201x?

The reason I believe operations returning an IEEE 754 result should properly signal IEEE 754 exceptions is that while those are defined in the 1788 standard they are effectively extensions to 754 and have been described in this committee as things missing from 754, so they should obey 754 rules.

A 754 format must have the following additional requirements: to: The notion of a 754-conforming implementation has been introduced in Motion 6.04.

Use of the 754 data format and 754 directed rounding does not mean all aspects of 754 must be adopted in an interval arithmetic standard, and indeed they are not.

We will almost certainly not use all the specifications >> of 754 to specify 1788.

Note that IEEE 754 doesn't even require that math functions from [IEEE 754 §9] be correctly rounded.
